About Name Analysis
The TrackingTheThreat website
deals with a large amount of entity
information for people. And as it
is focused on the Al Qaeda terrorist
network, the majority of these names
have been translated from other
languages, primarily Arabic. As
names are translated, and reported
in various open source documents,
the variation of names becomes problematic.
How do you find a person in a database
when there are ten or twenty, perhaps
even one hundred different variations?
For example, take several variations
of the name Mohammed and try a web
search. Most search engines will
return an approximate count of results.
This can be useful in comparing
spellings to determine which are
most commonly used. The following
table shows variations of the name
Mohammed as reported by the Google
search engine:
|
Variation
|
Hits |
| Mohammed |
8,220,000 |
| Muhammad |
6,930,000 |
| Mohamed |
4,810,000 |
| Muhammed |
941,000 |
| Muhamed |
134,000 |
| Muhamad |
118,000 |
| Mohhamed |
4,860 |
Our query engine solves part
of this problem by employing phonetic
matching using the Metaphone algorithm.
When you search for Mohammed, the
query engine automatically considers
all phonetic variations of the name,
and results in a result set that
is far more encompassing than traditional
wildcard queries.
| While phonetic matching
provides a great set of
advantages when searching
against name variations,
there are additional techniques
that yield both higher accuracy,
and results based on linguistic
analysis of names. To that
end, the FMS Advanced Systems
Groups is proud to partner
with Language Analysis Systems,
Inc. (LAS), the leader in
providing multi-cultural
name recognition software
solutions. |

This site incorporates technology
from LAS to allow deeper understanding
of name variations-tools that transcend
the traditional phonetic matching
approaches. We invite you to
learn more about the LAS toolset—in
our view it offers the most powerful
set of solutions to the problems
introduced by names. As we continue
to develop the functionality of
this website, look for additional
integration with more tools from
the LAS solution.
